Classic Homemade Patty Melt

Ingredients

1. For the Beef Patties:

  • Ground Beef: 1 lb (preferably 80/20 lean-to-fat ratio for juiciness).
  • Seasoning: Salt and freshly cracked black pepper.
  • Optional: A dash of Worcestershire sauce or garlic powder.

2. For the Caramelized Onions:

  • Yellow Onions: 2 large, thinly sliced.
  • Butter: 2 tbsp.
  • Salt: A pinch to help release moisture.

3. For the Sandwich Assembly:

  • Bread: Sourdough or Rye bread (thick slices work best).
  • Cheese: Swiss cheese or Gruyère (for that gooey melt in the photo).
  • Butter: For toasting the bread.

4. The Secret Sauce (The Dipping Sauce):

  • Mayonnaise: 1/2 cup.
  • Ketchup: 2 tbsp.
  • Yellow Mustard: 1 tsp.
  • Paprika & Garlic Powder: A pinch of each.

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: Melt butter in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add onions and a pinch of salt. Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for about 20–25 minutes until they are deep golden brown and soft. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the Patties: Shape the beef into oval patties that match the shape of your bread slices. Make them slightly larger than the bread, as they will shrink during cooking. Season both sides generously with salt and pepper.
  3. Sear the Beef: In a hot skillet, sear the patties for 3–4 minutes per side until fully cooked and browned. Remove from the pan.
  4. Assemble the Sandwich:
    • Butter one side of each bread slice.
    • Place the bread (butter-side down) in a skillet.
    • Layer a slice of cheese, the cooked beef patty, a generous spoonful of caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese.
    • Top with the second slice of bread (butter-side up).
  5. The Final Melt: Grill the sandwich over medium heat for 2–3 minutes per side until the bread is golden brown and “crunchy,” and the cheese has completely melted over the meat.
  6. Serve: Cut in half and serve hot with the dipping sauce and a side of crispy fries.

Enjoy your meal!
